Wrong Way Crash on US 1 Leads to Death
The Florida Highway Patrol is currently investigating an accident that has killed one driver and left another injured. The two-car crash occurred just after 3:30 a.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes of U.S. 1. Investigators said the driver of a pickup truck was driving northbound in the southbound lanes before crashing head-on into the driver of a white Buick.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the crash and found the driver of the white vehicle dead on scene. Detectives said the victim was a male who may have been driving home from work.
The driver of the pickup truck, who has been identified as Dawn Broadhead, was airlifted to Kendall Regional Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.
According to FHP, dispatchers received numerous calls from drivers that someone was traveling on U.S. 1 in the wrong direction. “I’ve always said that speed kills, speed kills,” said FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez. “When you’re traveling in the wrong direction of traffic and you collide into a vehicle head-on, chances are somebody is going to lose their lives.”
Preliminary investigation reveals alcohol may have played a role in this deadly crash. Broadhead is expected to face a slew of charges.
The southbound lanes of U.S.-1 were shut down for hours while police investigate.
Even though wrong-way accidents are statistically less common than other types of roadway accidents, they do happen at a rate higher than you might expect. Statistics show that wrong way crashes are about five times more likely to happen between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m.
