Street Racing Leads to a Fatal Bus Crash

A multi-car accident involving a bus and two cars has left one person dead and two others injured.

Officials are investigating the scene of an accident where a Miami-Dade Transit bus and multiple cars were involved in a deadly accident over the weekend on Saturday. Investigators think that street racing may have ultimately been the cause of the crash.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Northwest 36th Street and 17th Avenue at approximately 7:00 a.m. According to Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll, a Mercedes Benz that could have been travelling Eastbound on 36th street collided with a Nissan Maxima. Lt. Carroll said in a statement, “That impact was so severe that it threw one of the vehicles into the bus, causing the driver of the Nissan to be ejected.”

Police investigators said that the man who had been driving the Nissan Maxima died on the scene of the crash. The woman who was in the passenger seat of the Mercedes had to be extricated by crews from Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue.

Both passenger and driver in the Mercedes were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, and are listed in serious condition. Officials say that no one inside the Miami-Dade transit bus was seriously injured.

Miami-Dade Police Detective Robin Pinkard said that Miami-Dade’s traffic homicide division is investigating what might have caused the deadly collision. Investigators said they will obtain surveillance video from the bus and the traffic red-light cameras located at the intersection to see what happened.

The names of the victim and those injured in the crash have not yet been released.

While it is still somewhat unclear what actually happened in this tragic accident, if illegal street or drag racing is involved, it could carry heavy penalties and liabilities. Street racing and drag racing on city streets and highways is a dangerous activity leading to many accidents, injuries, and fatalities on the road. It is also illegal. Such activities are responsible for injuring and even killing other unsuspecting drivers, passengers, bicyclists and pedestrians.
