Man Killed in a High Speed Chase, AK-47 Used
A high speed car chase through the streets of Opa-locka on Sunday has ended in a shooting that sent a South Florida man to the hospital, city officials said.
Opa-locka spokesperson David Chiverton said two cars were chasing the victim’s vehicle at high speeds until he stopped near Northwest 141st Street and 23rd Place. The victim, a man in his early 20’s, was shot in the back while he was exiting his car. Police said they believe an AK-47 was used. They found dozens of shell casings at the scene.
According to Chiverton, the victim then jumped out of his car, swam across a canal and collapsed in a resident’s yard. He was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The alleged shooters are unknown are still currently at large, with police continuing their search for them.
Such incidents unfortunately are on the rise in cities across the United States. Once these criminals are caught, their troubles are just beginning. The victim has rights to bring a civil case against those responsible for their injuries. Had this incident ended in tragedy, the victim’s loved ones would have been entitled to damages such as wrongful death. Civil charges can result in restitution being paid to family in terms of fines, added jail time and other costs.
