2 Dead After Canal Plunge

Two people are dead after a driver lost control of the Porsche that they were travelling in and sent it plunging into a canal early on Friday morning. Speed was a factor in the fatal accident. The accident occurred just before 2 a.m. on the eastbound Dolphin Expressway. The vehicle crossed several lanes of traffic approximately 500 feet then hit a guardrail before plunging into the canal at 42nd Avenue.

Miami Fire Rescue crews arrived on scene to find one man trapped in the car and the other in the water. Divers found one victim inside of the vehicle and freed him from the submerged vehicle. Miami Fire Rescue Lieutenant Ignatius Carroll said he was unresponsive as well as the second victim who was floating in the water outside of the car.

Both men were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and were pronounced dead on arrival. The driver was identified as 34-year-old Hector E. Cartagena and the passenger, 26-year-old Wilmer Alexander Espana. Both men were from Miami.

Drivers under the age of 30, especially males, are far more likely to be involved in fatal crashes that involve excessive rates of speed.  Studies have shown that drivers who are older and far more experienced tend to be far less likely to speed or engage in reckless behavior when they get behind the wheel. Drivers over 30 are also far less likely to be involved in accidents or take unnecessary risks when driving.
