A tanker truck crashed into a canal after it collided with another vehicle along the Florida Turnpike in Broward County last week. The injured driver of that tractor-trailer rig had to be rescued by emergency crews.
NBC Miami reports that the incident happened near Hollywood Boulevard when a two-vehicle crash involving a Mercedes Benz and an 18-wheeler at approximately 6:00 a.m. The tanker trailer was sent off the pavement of the highway and into a nearby canal.
Rescuers had to go into the canal in order to extricate the driver of the tanker from the cab. He was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment a short time later. So far, authorities have not released the identity of the driver.
Investigators say that the truck crashed into the Mercedes which suffered significant rear-end damage. Reporters spoke to the brother of the man driving the Mercedes Benz, who told them that his brother was uninjured in the major accident.
A Hazmat cleanup crew was dispatched to the site to remove the fuel from the tanker and determine if there was any spillage from the crash. Traffic was backed up on the turnpike for several hours while the accident was investigated and the site was cleared.
Investigators have not determined who was at fault in the crash and no charges have been filed so far.
