Man Sentenced to 8 Years for DUI Crash

A South Florida man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in the death of another driver in a wrong-way accident.

On Feb. 11, 2011, at around 3:30 a.m., Omar Bravo was driving the wrong way on the eastbound lanes of the MacArthur Causeway when he collided with Matthew Montenegro’s car. Montenegro, 26, died at the scene of the accident.

Bravo admitted in court to drinking alcohol at a bar before the incident. He was three times over the legal BAC limit of 0.08 according to the prosecution. Arguments for the defense countered saying that Montenegro’s blood alcohol levels were also over the legal limit at the time of the accident in an attempt to lower the sentence.

The judge opted to sentence Bravo to 8 years rather than to issue the maximum penalty of 15 years or a lower sentence of between 2 and 4 years. Bravo is to serve out his sentence in a state prison and then seven years of probation with a permanent loss of his driver’s license.
