Hit And Run Injures 3 People

A hit-and-run crash in Opa –locka injured three people that had to be airlifted to an area hospital for treatment.

CBS Local in Miami reported that in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 3 at NW 22nd Avenue and 135th Street. A vehicle was overturned after it was struck at the intersection at approximately 5:30 a.m. A man and woman were trapped inside.

According to Fire Captain Christopher Morales, it was a tricky operation and took some time since the two people inside the overturned car were trapped on top of each other. “Once we were able to get the vehicle stabilized on its side, we were able to take the roof off from the side without damaging or causing anymore injury to the victims,” Morales said in a statement to CBS. Fire crews had to be careful to not cause the occupants more pain.

In the end, Miami-Dade firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life in order to remove the roof of the vehicle and finally extricate them from the wreckage. The victims were taken by helicopter to the hospital for treatment.

The suspect vehicle in the crash was also overturned; however, it appears that the driver fled the scene of the crash. The passenger stayed at the scene and was later also taken to the hospital.  After sunrise, investigators later found beer bottles scattered around the accident site and believe that they came from the suspect vehicle.

Authorities are looking for the driver and will charge them for suspicion of DUI and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
