Speeding Driver Causes SUV To Roll Over

A driver with a history of moving violations including four license suspensions and two prior convictions of DUI has been arrested after a hit-and-run crash in Hialeah that has left one person dead.

CBS Local in Miami reported that on Wednesday, July 3rd, Danny Leiva, 40, was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry eastbound on East 5th Avenue in the southbound lanes at high speed.

Leiva continued until reaching the intersection of East 5th Avenue and East 41st Street and blew through a stop sign. The Camry collided with a 2007 Dodge Durango carrying a 54-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman. The impact caused the Durango to roll over.

According to a spokesperson with Hialeah Fire Rescue, the woman in the Durango was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The victim is identified as Blanca Duarton, 63. The man, whose identity was not released, was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center.

Police say that immediately after the collision, Leiva exited his vehicle fled the scene on foot. He was later identified by eyewitnesses to the fatal crash. He was later found by Hialeah Police officers canvassing the neighborhood around the crash site.

Investigators found several beer cans in the front passenger floorboard area of the Camry.

Leiva is facing charges of vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, fleeing the scene of an accident, and driving on a suspended or revoked license. The judge in the case set Leiva’s bail at more than $65,000 at the bond hearing on Wednesday morning.
