Is your Taxi Driver Insured? We Can Find Out

An accident on Interstate 95 on Sunday involving a taxi cab has left one person dead and traffic blocked for more than two hours on Sunday. According to official reports, a taxi driver lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a wall near the Northwest 79th Street exit just after 6:00 p.m. Investigators said at least one person was killed in the accident.

Every year, thousands of people are injured in accidents involving taxi cabs. Taxi cab accidents can happen because of driver inexperience or even because of reckless driving habits. A taxi driver may make an improper lane change, or fail to keep an adequate following distance between his vehicle and others, or fail to yield the right of way. Some independent cab owners or even those who work for established companies will fail to keep equipment in good, safe running order.

In the state of Florida, it is a requirement that taxi or hack drivers are registered and have a minimum coverage of $125,000 for bodily injury insurance for each person and $250,000 for each accident. Florida taxi drivers must also maintain a minimum of $50,000 property damage coverage.

If anyone has been injured by or in a taxi cab where the driver was at fault, they have a maximum of $125,000 in liability insurance available to them. If more than one person is injured in or by a taxi cab driver who is at fault, then there is a maximum of $250,000.

It can be very difficult to confirm whether or not a taxi driver has enough insurance. Many taxi cab operators do claim to be “self-insured”. It may also be difficult to establish who is really at fault in the accident. That’s where we can help.
