A rollover accident can be terrifying because there is a complete loss of control. If you are in such an accident, there is the potential of that accident causing very either serious injuries or even death. Even though it is often SUV’s that most often more likely to have rollover accident, the truth is that it can happen to any vehicle. All that is needed are the right conditions.

You can keep yourself and others save and prevent rollover accidents by following these precautions:

Wear seat belts – Seat belts keep you safely in your seat so that you are not thrown about in an accident. Most states in the U.S. have laws that require the use of seat belts and child restraints. Half of all rollover accident fatalities happen when a person is either partially or completely ejected from the vehicle they are riding in.

Check Your Tire Pressure – The owner’s manual of your vehicle has the recommended tire pressure or PSI in it, or on some tires this is embossed on the rubber itself. Check your tires often to insure that all the tires on your vehicle are properly inflated. Also check to see that you have an adequate amount of tread on your tires and that they are in good repair.

Don’t Overload Your Vehicle – When a vehicle is overloaded, it decreases its overall stability. On an SUV or pickup truck, this is very important because the center of gravity. Cargo carried on the roof of a vehicle also changes its center of gravity. Place the heaviest cargo low on the floor, as far from the rear end, and as close to the center of the vehicle as possible. This will decrease your chances of tipping or rolling over because of a poor load distribution.

Pay Attention to Your Rate of Speed – The faster the rate of speed you are travelling, the more you increase the chance of having a rollover accident. If you take a turn or a curve too quickly, it can cause a rollover.

Avoid Distracted Driving Driver distraction can be a major cause of rollover accidents. If you can, try to avoid use of a cellphone, an MP3 music player, or of a GPS device while you are behind the wheel. If you must use any of these types of devices, it is far safer for you to pull off the road and only get back on again after you have finished focusing on anything other than the road. It only takes a split second for an accident to happen.

Be a Defensive Driver – There are always potential hazards out on the road. You can never predict what another driver may do, or an animal such as a deer or a pet may dart in front of you. You will have to react quickly in order to avoid an accident. Always be prepared for the unexpected when you get behind the wheel.

Know Your Vehicle – Every vehicle handles differently. Be aware of things such as the stiffness of the brakes and clutch, or how quickly your vehicle will accelerate or decelerate. Having all of these factors in mind while you are driving will help you to avoid potential accidents such as rollovers.
