Stolen Tow Truck Crashes into Condo
A stolen tow truck has crashed into a condominium apartment. Miraculously, the residents inside were unharmed.
Investigators say that at approximately 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, 21-year-old Daniel Iorido crashed a tow truck into an apartment located at 1555 W. 44 Place in Hialeah.
In a statement, Hialeah Police Lieutenant Carl Zogby said that the driver lost control of the Hialeah Ranger tow truck in a nearby intersection and crashed into a first floor condominium.
Iorido had to be extracted from the stolen vehicle by rescue crews and was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police handcuffed the driver before crews extricated him. Another tow vehicle was called to pull the first truck from the home.
Rescuer Dean Perkerson with Hialeah Fire Rescue stated that this is the first time that his department has ever seen someone taken out of an extrication in handcuffs. There was a concern on the part of rescuers that the driver might have been armed and dangerous.
Iorido was airlifted from the scene of the crash in stable condition. No other injuries were reported at the crash. Iorido has since been released from the hospital and was taken to jail by police. He has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol along with fleeing and eluding police. Other possible charges are pending as a result of a separate investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Of course, an accident can happen at any time, and often times they do happen in the home. No one expects that the place which should provide safety shelter and comfort to be the likely scene of potential damage or injury from a drunk driver.
