Power Outage May have Cause Serious Crash with Police Cruiser

A two-car crash involving an Audi and Miami-Dade police cruiser on its way to a call has left the driver of the Audi and a child in the back seat with critical injuries. The reason? A power outage.

According to authorities, the accident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of NW 57th Avenue and West Flagler Street when an Audi A4, with three adults and five children aboard, struck the patrol car while attempting to make a left turn.

Because of the storm, the lights at the intersection were out and police indicate that the officer was in ‘emergency mode.’

The driver of the Audi has been identified as Hector Meraz, 42.  Meraz was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.  Two adult passengers also in the Audi, Fanny Gomez and Maria Elena Ortiz, were taken to the Ryder Trauma Center for treatment where they were listed in stable condition.

Also injured in the crash was a 2 or 3-year-old child who had been riding in the back seat The child, whose name has not been released, was transported to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Two additional children in the vehicle at the time of the crash were taken to the Ryder Trauma Center.  The two other children were also listed in stable condition.

The police officer and a K-9 were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Detectives believe the rainy weather and non-functioning light were contributing factors to the crash.
