Passengers Rescued from Wrecked Boat
Miami is well-known for its boating, but there are a lot of hazards out on the water. A jetty hidden by the tide can cause a boat to wreck. That’s what happened recently near Pompano Beach. Fortunately for the passengers, there were people nearby to help.
A 32-foot boat with at least six people on board hit some rocks. Witnesses saw the wreck and swam toward the rocks, then walked to where the boat was. The boat was tilting back and forth with the waves and taking on water. Several children were on board. Only one had to be taken to the hospital by chopper. Everyone else got off safely, if a little bruised. Later inspection of the damage showed a two foot gash on the side of the boat from where it struck the jetty.
Not every boater is so lucky to have people nearby that can help. Always remember to carry safety gear when you are out on the water. That includes life vests and a flare gun in case you need to signal where you are. Also, if you plan on swimming or diving, know your capabilities so you don’t endanger yourself.
