One Dead, Three Injured In Pedestrian Accident

No one has any idea when or where an accident can happen. Whether you are in a motor vehicle, on a bicycle or even enjoying a walk with family members, tragedy can strike. Such a tragedy happened just before the Independence Day holiday this summer when a family was struck by a car while walking on a sidewalk in Sunny Isles Beach. The accident left the father dead and the mother and two children injured.

According to a story reported by the NBC affiliate station in Miami, on Tuesday police arrested Joseph Jacob Franco, 27, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the death of Amir Pelleg. 34.

On Tuesday, July 3, 2018, Pelleg, his wife and his two daughters, aged 6 and 2 years old, were walking on the sidewalk two blocks from their home in the 17400 block of Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles when they were struck by a Honda Odyssey minivan driven by Franco. The vehicle went off the roadway and struck the family before ramming into a concrete wall.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene of the crash and pronounced Amir Pelleg dead at the scene. Pelleg’s wife, Zulma, was left in a coma while their daughters suffered multiple broken bones in the crash.

Eyewitnesses to the fatal crash said that Franco was seen taking multiple items out of his vehicle and put in a nearby trash can. A police officer arriving on the scene found the discarded items which consisted of more than 20 metal canisters that were both used and unused. The canisters were allegedly filled with nitrous oxide and used as an inhalant for “whip-its” as a way to get high.

Franco was given house arrest and a $5,000 bond.
