Live Wire Falls on Cars, Causes Fire

Two cars were completely destroyed after a power line snapped and came down on top of them Tuesday morning.

According to authorities, the incident happened along Southwest 62nd Avenue in South Miami. Police Major with the South Miami Police, Renee Landa said that it appeared that the wire snapped and fell on top of the cars, causing a fire to break out.

The owner of the two vehicles, Leroy McKinney, woke up Tuesday to see smoke and flames coming from his Chrysler 300 and Ford Explorer that were parked right outside his apartment. Both McKinney and South Miami Police are grateful that no one was injured in the incident.

Officials have not determined why the power line snapped and an investigation is still underway.

There are several factors that can contribute to personal injury accidents such as equipment failure due to inadequate maintenance of equipment. Sometimes utility companies such as electric, telecommunications or cable companies do not properly maintain poles and these can snap without warning. A rotten pole or one that has too high of a load for its size can snap off and injure those who are in the wrong place at the wrong time or cause damage of property.
