Hit-And-Run Driver Strikes Person Waiting For Bus

Millions of people rely on buses and public transportation to help them get around. It provides an economical, mostly safe way for passengers to get to work, school, or run errands.  For those waiting along the bus routes, cities benches provide a way for passengers to sit while they wait.

NBC Miami reports that a man who was waiting for a bus on a bus bench in the area near 7th Avenue and 58th Street was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Wednesday, July 31st.

Miami Police Department investigators say that the accident happened at approximately 3:00 p.m. when a black SUV crashed into the bench, hitting a pedestrian who was sitting on the bench at the time.  Eyewitnesses say the vehicle stopped momentarily before speeding away from the scene.

Police apprehended the motorist just a few blocks south of the scene of the crash.  Police questioned and then arrested the suspect driver in the case. No further information has been released at this time. 

The victim, whose identity has not yet been released by authorities, is described as a 63year-old black man.  He is said to have suffered significantly serious injuries in the crash. No information has been released regarding his current condition.

Jeff Barry told NBC that he saw the accident happen said that he knew the victim as a regular at an area convenience store. Berry was a little shaken by the incident because he knew the gentleman who was struck by the hit and run driver. “It kinda got emotional to me because that could be anybody that I know,” Berry said.  “That coulda been a family member.”
