Wrong-Way Driver on Florida Turnpike Kills Two

An accident on the Florida Turnpike in southwest Miami-Dade involving a wrong-way driver has claimed the lives of two people in an early morning crash on Wednesday.

According to an article appearing on the CBS Local affiliate in Miami website, the fatal crash involved three vehicles and happened just before 4:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes near the SW 216th Street exit ramp. One of the vehicles involved was a prisoner transport van.

Florida Highway Patrol’s Joe Sanchez indicated in the statement that the driver of a Toyota Scion had gotten on to the Florida Turnpike and was heading south in the northbound lanes. Even though the driver of prison transport attempted to avoid the crash, the van ended up getting sideswiped in the accident.

A second vehicle in the crash, a Volkswagen Jetta that had been traveling directly behind the police van, struck the Scion in a head-on collision. Authorities pronounced the driver of the Scion dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta was transported to Jackson South Hospital but later died as a result of the injuries that they sustained in the crash.

A prisoner who was being transported in the police van was also hurt in the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released word on their condition.

The families of the victims involved in this crash will have to face the difficult emotional and financial realities after such a devastating loss. Picking up the pieces after a crash can leave families reeling and struggling to put their lives back together once again.

It will be well within the rights of the surviving family members to file a civil lawsuit against the insurance company and others involved as a way to obtain compensation for their losses. Such compensation could go toward taking care of any hospital bills, potential lost earnings, funeral expenses and wrongful death. It is possible that the court may side with the family and award further monetary damages from losing the companionship and comfort of a loved one.
