An accident at the Miami International airport has left a 51-year old pedestrian dead who was returning to the area from a business trip.

The fatal crash occurred sometime just after 12 p.m. outside Terminal H between the gates for Delta Airlines and Aeromexico. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 5,000 pedestrians are killed in traffic crashes each year in the United States. A pedestrian is killed in a traffic accident every 108 seconds on average. Each year, approximately 45,000 people are injured in any given year. That means that a pedestrian is injured in a traffic crash every 7 minutes. Most pedestrian accidents occur in in urban areas, with almost 80% of these taking place at locations that are not intersections.

Pedestrians can be injured in any number of situations. Most motorists do exercise reasonable care. When crossing the street in places other than in the crosswalk or at an intersection, the pedestrian may have to yield the right of way to oncoming cars. Illegally parked cars that create a visual obstruction for pedestrians may be a contributing factor in an accident involving a pedestrian and a motor vehicle. Driver distraction can also play a key role in accidents involving cars and pedestrians.
