Officer Killed in Rear-End Accident in Coral Springs

A car accident in Coral Springs early Sunday morning has left a Fort Lauderdale Police Detective dead and a Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Captain injured.

According to Coral Springs Police, the fatal crash happened approximately 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of State Road 7 and Wiles Road when Detective Christopher Sheehan, driving a 1995 Jeep Wrangler, was heading northbound on State Road 7 when his vehicle was rear-ended by a 2010 Dodge Challenger driven by 29-year-old Joselyn Lopez.

Sheehan was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

Also injured in the crash was Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Captain Jacob Snowhite, 41, of Jupiter, Florida. Showhite is still currently in the hospital.

Lopez was not injured in the accident.

Authorities say that initial investigations indicate that speed and alcohol may have played a role in the crash. The fatal crash remains under investigation.

The Fort Lauderdale Department confirms that Detective Sheehan was a seven-year veteran of the police force.
