A South Florida man is recovering in the hospital after being trapped in his apartment after it caught fire. The blaze broke out Monday in the man’s second floor apartment near West Sample Road and 88th Avenue. Coral Springs Fire Rescue released video of smoke billowing from the windows of the apartment and firefighters rescuing the man.

Rescue crews transported him to Northwest Medical Center where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

The case of the fire is under investigation.

Fires can be devastating. They often cause serious destruction of property, loss of jobs and ways to earn a living. Fires can also cause serious personal injuries such as burns or even be a cause of death. Picking up the pieces of your life after a fire, whether it is your home or a business that has been damaged or destroyed, the experience can be both devastating and time consuming.

Ask a firefighter and they can tell you that fires can be caused by any number of factors. You need three elements for a fire to start: Fuel, oxygen and ignition. Without these three things, a fire will not start and if a fire is deprived of any one of any of these three essential elements, a fire will go out. Some of the causes of fires can be directly attributed to:

  • Cooking fires involving burning food or grease
  • Faulty electrical wiring
  • Defective appliances or equipment
  • Chemical reactions from solvents and cleaners
  • A natural gas leak
  • Arson
  • Flammable objects such as clothing or other combustibles too close to heat sources.
  • Negligence with flames, lighters or cigarettes

When you are the victim of a fire, you and your family will probably have to find another to live. If you have been injured as the result of a fire, recovery can make the process take even longer. Medical costs that come from treatment of burns, rehabilitation and physical therapy as well as constructive surgery may also be needed before there is a complete recovery from your injuries. Those expenses that surround such care can add up quickly and can become overwhelming.
