Good Samaritan Injured in Hit and Run

It’s s natural human instinct to want to assist someone when you see them in trouble. We all hope that if we ever find ourselves in a tough spot, someone will be there to look after us, too.

A man who was doing a good deed in assisting two other people who were in an accident ended up being hurt himself when he was the victim of a hit and run crash early Saturday morning.

According to authorities, the accident happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. when a Ford pickup truck being driven by Raymond Brown, 58, was struck by a motorcyclist, identified by Tonio McGowen, 33 who was attempting to make a left turn to go north on S.W. 29th Terrace. Following the collision, Brown stopped his truck.

A motorist, Norman Maryland, 57, was parked nearby and witnessed the event and ran over to offer his assistance.

As Maryland was standing on the side of the road, a Chrysler Pacifica struck both him and the motorcycle. The driver of the Pacifica then continued westbound on West Broward Boulevard before turning northbound onto N.W. 30th Avenue.

The Pacifica broke down a short distance away from the scene of the hit-and-run crash. The driver and passengers inside the vehicle abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

They are still being sought by police.

The motorcyclist, McGowen and Good Samaritan, Maryland ,were taken by ambulance to Broward Health Medical Center to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

It’s only a matter of time before these individuals are caught and then there will be serious consequences for their actions. According to Florida Statute 316.027 , if you are involved in a crash, involving death or personal injuries must immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the crash, or as close as possible. If you are involved in such an accident, then you must remain at the scene of the crash until you have been released by law enforcement officer. Needless to say, leaving the scene of an accident is never a good idea.
