Gators Causing Crashes

Florida has more to worry about than just drunk and careless drivers on the road. Florida is full of wildlife that can block roadways and cause serious injuries. Notably, Florida is full of alligators that can stop a vehicle in its tracks. CBS Miami shared two stories about this phenomenon.

A man was injured near Tampa after he ran into an alligator with his motorcycle. He didn’t notice it until it was too late. He hit the 10-ft alligator and was thrown from the bike. The gator was killed in the impact and the man was taken to the hospital.

In another incident, a driver in Sarasota escaped injury dodging another alligator in the road. The gator was struck but the driver was unharmed.

Gators like to sun themselves on warm rocks. That’s basically what our roadways are, long strips of hot rock that the cold-blooded creatures love. Gators can also dart from the side of the road quite quickly and block vehicles. If you see one in the road, carefully try to drive around it if it is safe to do so. If you hit one, pull over but do not get out of your vehicle. Gators can cling to the bottom of your vehicle and attack you when you try to leave. Call the authorities from inside your car and wait for assistance.
